Ghana calls for review of Nigeria’s import prohibition list
The Ghanaian government has asked Nigeria to consider a review of the prohibition list banning the importation of specific goods and commodities into the Nigerian market, from countries including Ghana.
The Speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament, Dr Alban Kingsford made the request while addressing members of the House of Representatives during plenary in Abuja.
The Ghanaian Speaker also decried the low level of trade between African countries, saying out of about US$460billion in trade volume, only US$69billion was transacted among African nations.
Dr Kingsford stated that the recent trade scuffles between the two countries over some measures taken by Ghana leading to the closure of shops belonging to Nigerians and other nationals will be resolved amicably.
He said Ghana and Nigeria will work together to resolve all issues that may affect their relationship for their socio-economic development.
The Ghanian speaker revealed that he has set up a seven-man committee that will meet with their Nigerian counterparts for the passage of the Act to establish the “Ghana-Nigeria Business Framework” to address trade disputes arising from policies of governments.
Dr Kingsford added that the two countries will work to tackle all challenges that will jeopardise their relationship.
He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his support for the extension of Ghana’s ECOWAS leadership to consolidate the gains made in the past.
According to him, the position taken by Nigeria reflects their resolve to rid the subregion of the challenges of terrorism and other socio-economic challenges.
He also commended former President, Goodluck Jonathan for his efforts to end the political instability in Mali.
