Facebook Inc. has concluded plans to create 10,000 jobs in the European Union over the next five years to assist in the development of metaverse – an online world where individuals may move and converse in a virtual environment.

The social media giant announced the news on Monday.

“No one company will own and operate the Metaverse,” Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president of global affairs, wrote in a blog post. “Bringing this to life will take collaboration and cooperation across companies, developers, creators and policymakers.”

Utilizing virtual and augmented reality technologies, Facebook intends to increase the impression of “virtual presence” by simulating the experience of in-person interaction.

Facebook, which has made significant investments in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), including the acquisition of businesses such as Oculus, plans to connect its roughly three billion users via a variety of devices and apps.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, believes the metaverse will be accessible via VR, AR, PC, mobile devices, and game consoles.
It has already invested $50 million toward the creation of the Metaverse and the development of a new remote work software in which users with Oculus Quest 2 headsets can conduct meetings as avatar versions of themselves.
