Stakeholders call for an update of ICT courses in Nigerian schools

The need for Stakeholders in Education to redesign ICT courses in the Curriculum to enhance Digital Safety Education in line with 21st century needs.

This was part of submissions by panellists in Abuja at the Digital Rights and Inclusion Forum, organized by Paradigm Initiative.

One of the Panelists, Dr Tanimu Ibrahim, a lecturer with the Federal University, Dustinma, Katsina emphasized the need for updating of the ICT and training and retraining of teachers to help pupils to acquire technologically based Knowledge at all levels of education.

” Sincerely, there are numerous Challenges, but my advice for Teachers is to look beyond the Challenges and forge ahead to equip themselves with ICT skills, for the nation to overcome digital illiteracy and for the pupils to explore positive advantages of the Internet,” Dr Ibrahim submitted.

On Relevance of Digital Education, another Panelist, also a Lecturer with the Federal College of Education, Kano, Dr Patrick Babagbemi advised Education Stakeholders to change irrelevance courses or Subjects that hindering the performance of Students.

” There is an urgent need for Stakeholders to remove unwanted courses or subjects that are not related to Students’ Course of Study, all these constitute hindrances to the performance of Students,“ Dr Babagbemi explained.

In his Contribution, a Computer Science Teachers in Government Secondary School, Apo, Abuja, Mr Zakaria Dado stressed the need for a rapid approach from all Stakeholders to address what he described as Digital colonization.

The panellists suggested the replacement of irrelevant subjects with Digital Education courses to aid the pupils in learning fast and meet up with the global Community.

The Co-host, Mrs Suliyat Idris advocated the need for the government, parents and teachers to ensure the implementation of Digital Safety Education at all levels of learning for the nation to get rid of all challenges associated with ICT learning.

“The essence of this platform is to advocate Digital Safety inclusion in School Curriculum for the nation to cope with the rest of the world”. Mrs Idris stressed.

The theme of the event is ”Digital Education: a Prerequisites for implementing 21st Century Curriculum.”
