FFS tasks fuel station operators on fire safety code

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has called on gas station operators across the country to familiarize themselves with the fire safety code to prevent fires in the workplace.

This is contained in a statement by the Public Relations Officer, Mr Abraham Paul, in Abuja.

According to the statement, FFS Acting Controller General Samson Karebo said this was important due to the busy operations experienced in recent times.

The Nigerian News Agency reports that the FFS fire safety code was recently reviewed by the service in conjunction with major stakeholders, but has yet to be approved by the government.

Karebo said becoming familiar with the code would let operators and staff know how to react to fire emergencies and when to call the fire service if necessary.

Ag. CGF instructed all States and Zonal Commands to be on high alert and begin surveillance operations in high-risk areas, especially during this period of fuel shortages.

He commiserated with the governments and people of Kwara, Plateau and Lagos States for the recent fire incidents that resulted in the loss of life and property worth millions.

According to him, the officers who exercised courage and stopped the spread of the Mobil service station fire in Lagos will be recommended for promotion.

“This is to encourage them and others who risk their lives for the love of their country and humanity,” he said.

The FFS chief called on members of the public, especially commuters, to always give firefighters the right of way during fire emergencies.

He stressed that the Service would not tolerate any attack on firefighters or any form of disruption of their legitimate duties.
