First Bank Nigeria Ltd., in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Lagos, has donated four renovated classroom blocks, a library and a well to Lafiaji Senior Secondary School, Lagos, to improve learning and sanitation.

Mr Babawale Agbeyangi, president of the Rotary Club of Lagos, said at the inauguration of the projects on Tuesday that they would improve health and education in the state.

Agbeyangi noted that the club has also partnered with FBNHoldings to create a conducive learning environment for students.

He said the club conducted cervical screenings and vaccinations for 200 female students at the school, trained teachers in ICT and donated equipment to ensure students had access to STEM education.

The president praised the bank and FBNHoldings for supporting the project, noting that it would help shape the future of students.

Agbeyangi said the club would continue to take action on sustainable projects that would have a lasting impact on communities.

Dr Adesola Adeduntan, CEO of FirstBank, said the project resonated with the bank’s corporate responsibility and sustainability projects in health and education.

Adeduntan, representing Bode-Akinwande, Head of Digital Marketing at FirstBank, said that the bank has provided educational intervention with far-reaching impacts for the past 27 years.

“During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, FirstBank launched a platform aimed at moving one million students in the country to e-learning and supported 20,000 public schools in Lagos with mobile learning devices.

“In particular, the initiatives have received global recognition and awards,” he said.

Adeduntan pointed out that investment in education will ensure the future of students and the development of the nation.

According to him, the expected profitability of the projects is an outstanding performance of the students.

He urged the students to maximize the use of the facilities for their benefit.

He advised students to continue to soak up the culture of hygiene and physical well-being, noting that health is wealth.

Adeduntan praised the Rotary Club for its humanitarian efforts aimed at improving life and society.

Ms. Folasade Adefisayo, Lagos State Education Commissioner, commended the club and its partners for supporting the state in improving student welfare and the level of education.

Adefisayo noted that the state was embarking on improving the infrastructure of schools across the state and said that the government alone could not close the infrastructure gap in the education sector.

She said the state was committed to improving wellness and the quality of education, noting that her dedication helped improve the state’s success rate in WAEC to 79 per cent.

Similarly, Mr Muyideen Alade-Folawiyo, Chairman of the East Lagos Island Council Development Area, said the project aligned with the health and education goals of the state and council.

Alade-Folawiyo said the classrooms would ensure students learn in a conducive way, while the well would reduce the incidence of water-borne diseases.

In addition, Mr Folorunsho Egharva, the director of the school, thanked the club and its members, committing to ensure judicious use of the facilities.
