1XCUP 2024: 20 teams to battle for N20m as competition kicks off August 5

A staggering amount of N20 million is on the line as 20 teams are set to battle each other in the 1XBET Cup 2024 which kicks off on August 5.

This was disclosed by former Nigerian international, Waidi Akanni who conducted the draw for the competition at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos on Wednesday, July 24.

Akanni conducted the draw alongside two other former Super Eagles players, Victor Igali and Friday Ekpo and said that there is a vast improvement from last year’s edition as regards the prize money.

“1XBET is doing it the bigger way by increasing the prize money for the 2024 edition of the competition as they have decided to increase it from N5 million to N20m,” he said.

“People should also expect to see the best brand of football being played at the competition and I can assure you that the organizers will be transparent in their dealings.”

Following the draw, Group A includes five teams such as Bethel FC, G-12 FA, 11 Football Academy, Gunners Links FC and Wasola FC.

Somolu/Bariga, Collin Edwin FC, Team 360, Dosu Joseph FA and Ilupeju Piller of Ekiti will slug it out in Group B.

Group C has teams such as Odion Ighalo FC, Young Strikers, Emiloju Football Academy, Emanjuls and Ikorodu Eagles battling it out with each other.

The likes of 36 Lions FC, Dominion FC, Royalty Football Academy, Diadem Stallions and China Stars will do battle in Group D.

According to Akanni, the competition will kick off at the Legacy Pitch in Surulere, Lagos on Monday, August 5 and that week’s schedule will end on Wednesday, August 7.

He added that the group stage matches will be played for six weeks in the order of Monday to Wednesday.

The winner of each group qualifies for the knockout stage while the second and third teams in each group will meet each other in a play off.

The playoff matches will thereafter produce four teams who will then proceed to the quarter-finals alongside the four group winners, making a total of eight teams.

Akanni added that the final game of the 1XBET Cup 2024 will take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos on September 25 with the champions guaranteed a prize money of N20m while they will also be sponsored on a trip abroad.
