Former Anambra gov calls for more empowerment programmes for women

The former governor of Anambra, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has advocated more empowerment programmes for women.

Ezeife, who made the call in Abuja at the unveiling of a television reality show tagged “40 and Fabulous’’, urged women not to relent in their efforts toward contributing to nation-building.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the reality television show is targeted at redirecting career paths of multi-talented women from 40 years and above.

Represented by Mr Edozie Ezeugwu, Ezeife said that the initiative was a unique opportunity to create an enabling environment for women to discover and harness their potential.

He urged women to always use appropriate channels in showcasing their ingenuity.

“There is the need for women to think out of the box and develop strategies that will bring the nation to its peak.

“When women are empowered, you have changed the standard for many homes because they will multiply whatever seed you plant in their hands,’’ he said.

Ezeife urged governments at all levels and corporate bodies to key into the initiative which would create jobs and empower more Nigerians.

Similarly, Otumba Segun Runsewe, the Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture (NACA) stressed the need for women to be given more opportunities to contribute their quota to nation-building.

While appealing to women to use the platform to enhance their entrepreneurial skills, Runsewe described the reality TV show as a wake-up call for every woman.

According to him, it is never too late to step into a craft and make an impact, there is no age limit to creativity.

“Nigerian women are breaking international boundaries, they should also be encouraged to tap into resources available in the country to create such achievements.

“We must recognise their strength and abilities.

“We should be able to look forward to serious political women leaders who will step forward and show that they can thrive when given the opportunity,’’ he said.

He urged the menfolk to see the best in women and provide the necessary support that would encourage them to attain their aspirations.

The Chief Executive Officer of 40 and Fabulous reality TV show, Mrs Nnenna Abani, said that the show is set to conscientize the average woman in her role and position toward nation-building.

“This show is targeted at women who are multi-talented but not sure of their career direction.

“It is set to conscientize the average woman in her role and position toward nation-building via arts and craft.

“The show “40 and Fabulous’’ will make a strong statement showing that the world can be properly entertained without an iota of nudity and promiscuity which have characterised our recent reality show,’’ she said.

Abani pointed out that life could begin at 40 for women who felt their age was a barrier to their socio-economic growth.

“The show will help multi-tasking women choose the right careers as well as create a platform to empower, improve and build capacity for women attracting economic reward for their craft.

“Focus will be placed on crafts such as tailoring, photography, auto mechanic, singing, modelling, acting and visual art/graphics,” she said.

Mrs Abiodu Ohirita, Group Head, W-Initiative, Access Bank noted that a lot of economic power emerges when quality support was invested in the female entrepreneur.

“It is important to dedicate actions that cater for women, supporting their finances.

“If you empower a woman, you empower a nation because women work with dedication and passion, committed to achieving their goals.

“Women multiply every opportunity bestowed on them,’’ she said. (NAN)
