SON enforcement team and some tyre dealers
The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has vowed to clamp down on dealers and distributors of fake and substandard tyres in the country after its officials were prevented from carrying enforcement exercises in Abuja.
The SON Regional Coordinator, North Central, Mr Albert Wilberforce stated this after dealers of tyres in Apo, Kugbo and Area 1, Abuja prevented the enforcement team of the Organization from carrying out their duties.
Mr Wilberforce who expressed concern over the situation said SON would not be discouraged in its quest to rid Nigeria of fake and substandard products.
“We came here today alongside the Police and DSS to carry out our lawful duty but it’s unfortunate that we’re being attacked by the tyre dealers but we’ll not relent as you can see that my staff, security personnel have been attacked and vehicles damaged” Mr Wilberforce stated
He said despite the resistance, SON was able to confiscate some substandard tyres which would be destroyed to avoid being used again.
According to him, the fake tyres are been polished, wrapped and sold to unsuspecting Nigerians.
“What we are doing is to prevent Nigerians from being victims of fake tyres as you’re aware that festive period is fast approaching and some unsuspecting vehicle owners who want to travel with their families may come here to buy fake tyres without knowing” the Regional Coordinator stressed
He noted that substandard tyres are responsible for a greater percentage of death through accidents on the nation’s highway.
The SON Regional Coordinator explained that the Organization would continue to sensitize Nigerians and necessary stakeholders most especially motorists on the need to shun the patronage of fake tyres.
On the resistance in Apo and Kugbo by tyre dealers, Mr Wilberforce said SON would put in place measures to forestall future occurrences.
The Registrar Coordinator, therefore, called for the support of all stakeholders in the fight against substandard products in the country. (RadioNigeria)
