CFM empowers women wheat growers in Kano

Crown Flour Mill distributed water pumps and inputs to women farmers to accelerate wheat cultivation in Kano State on Wednesday.

The company also distributed food items to the beneficiaries at Biyamusu Village in Ajingi Local Government Area of the state.

Hajiya Rauda Musa-Umar, Wheat Development Officer in the company, said the company initiated viable programmes to encourage wheat production to augment the government’s efforts towards self-sufficiency in food production.

She said the gesture was also to support women farmers and achieve food security and economic diversification agenda.

She listed the items to include water pumps, improved variety seeds and pasta among others.

“We will keep on providing the necessary farming support and modern agronomic capacity building to smallholder farmers to boost wheat production in the country.

“Our focus is food security and improving livelihoods,” she said.

In his remarks, Dr Salim Saleh, President of, Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria, commended the gesture, saying that the intervention would boost wheat production in the country.

He urged corporate organisations and wealthy individuals especially those operating in the agriculture value chain, to emulate the gesture to achieve sustainable development in the sector.

One of the beneficiaries, Atika Shuaibu, appreciated the gesture and pledged to ensure effective utilisation of the inputs to improve her production output.

“I am happy to receive the water pump, we will stop hiring pumping machines for watering our crops.

“It will also assist us to achieve higher yields at harvest, we thank you for the assistance,” she said.

Also speaking, Alhaji Abdullahi Biyamusu, the Village Head of Biyamusu, called for more farmer support services and timely distribution of fertilisers and seeds to the farmers to encourage productivity. (NAN)
