The Plateau value chain support project is yielding results as the production capacity of the state’s potato producers has reached 960,000 metric tons per year.
Mr Thomas Muopshin, the state’s project coordinator, made the disclosure in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) to Jos.
Muopshin said production capacity has increased significantly following the introduction of disease-tolerant potato species and the use of fungicides.
He also said the project had connected many potato growers with agro-traders who were now working closely with them.
“The farmers who were frustrated with the bankruptcy have returned and are now established potato growers,” he said.
The project coordinator also revealed that some companies who wanted a good working relationship with the farmers now follow them to their farms and buy the products directly from them.
“Potato growers now have a ready market, making huge profits from their products more than ever before,” he said. (NAN)
