NLNG Train 7 project, game-changer for gas utilisation- IPMAN

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) believes the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) “Train 7” project is a game-changer for gas use in Nigeria.

IPMAN President, Chinedu Okoronkwo, made this known in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) Thursday in Lagos.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday kicked off the construction of the Train 7 project, as part of efforts to transform Nigeria into a gas-powered economy by 2030.

Okoronkwo said IPMAN is delighted with the vigour the federal government is deploying to update the 2007 National Gas Policy.

“We are very happy that the Train 7 project is becoming a reality with the first groundbreaking led on Tuesday by the president.

“The project is a game-changer as it will play a pivotal role in utilizing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for national development,” he said.

Okoronkwo further noted that the project would create employment opportunities for young Nigerians in engineering, procurement and construction, as well as build local capacity in the oil and gas industry.

He said that the declaration of the year 2021 to the year 2030 as the “Gas Development Decade” by the government would also be boosted by such projects.

Okoronkwo reiterated that IPMAN will continue to support efforts to deepen gas use in the country.

He said, “We (IPMAN) have a collaborative pact with the Petroleum Equalization Fund on how to help traders distribute gas to nooks and crannies across the country.

“The agreement involves the financing and co-location of mini-depots in existing facilities and appropriate locations owned by IPMAN members.

“The goal is to create 100 factories each in Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu and 50 each in other states during the first phase.”

NAN reports that the Train 7 project will increase NLNG’s production capacity by 35%, from 22 million MTPA to around 30 million MTPA.

The project is expected to create around 12,000 new jobs and an additional 40,000 indirect jobs. (NAA)
